Child Safety Standards Policy

1. Purpose

This policy outlines our commitment to safeguarding children and young people from sexual abuse and exploitation. We recognize our responsibility to create an environment that protects children and promotes their well-being in accordance with national child safety standards and human rights laws.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, contractors, board members, and any individual involved in the organization’s activities or operations who may come into contact with children.

3. Definitions

Child/Children: Any person under the age of 18.

Child Sexual Abuse: Involves engaging a child in sexual activity that he or she does not fully comprehend, is unable to give informed consent to, or that violates the laws or social taboos of society.

Exploitation: Involves the use of a child in work or other activities for the benefit of others in a way that is harmful to the child’s physical or mental health, development, or well-being.

4. Guiding Principles

Zero Tolerance: The organization has zero tolerance for any form of child sexual abuse or exploitation.

Best Interests of the Child: All actions and decisions must prioritize the safety, dignity, and best interests of the child.

Prevention-Focused: Prevention through education, awareness, and safeguarding measures is central to our approach.

5. Code of Conduct

All individuals must:

Treat children with respect and dignity at all times.

Never engage in any form of sexual activity or sexual relationship with a child.

Avoid being alone with a child where possible.

Refrain from any behavior that could be considered grooming.

Report any suspicions, disclosures, or allegations of abuse immediately.

6. Recruitment and Screening

We are committed to child-safe recruitment practices, which include:

Comprehensive interviews and reference checks.

Criminal background checks.

Ensuring staff and volunteers are trained on child protection prior to commencement.

7. Training and Awareness

All personnel must complete mandatory child safety training that includes:

Understanding child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Recognizing signs of abuse.

Responding appropriately to disclosures and suspicions.

8. Reporting and Response Procedures

Reporting: All concerns must be reported to the designated Child Safety Officer or supervisor immediately.

Confidentiality: Reports will be handled with sensitivity and confidentiality.

Action: The organization will take immediate steps to ensure the child’s safety, report to authorities where required, and initiate an internal investigation if appropriate.

9. Risk Management

Activities involving children will be assessed for potential risks, and appropriate safeguards will be implemented to minimize the risk of abuse or exploitation.

10. Monitoring and Review

This policy will be reviewed annually or following any incident or legislative change. Input from staff, volunteers, and children will be considered in the review process.
